Theatre & Dance
The Department of Theatre and Dance in the School of the Arts offers a degree in theatre that leads to a bachelor of arts and a degree in musical theatre that leads to a bachelor of fine arts. Much of the training is accomplished through practical experience—designing lights, sets, costumes or sound for a production, performing, stage managing, and directing. These activities culminate in main stage theatre productions, experimental plays, musicals and theatre for young audiences. Theatre majors can focus on a design track or an acting/directing track. The department also offers minors in theatre, film and dance.
In fall 2007, through a collaboration with the Alabama Ballet, the Samford University began a minor in dance. Dance minors attend classes in ballet, modern, jazz, choreography and dance history, some of which are taught by Alabama Ballet professionals, in addition to various courses in theatre. Performance opportunities include participation in the annual dance concert held in the Harrison Theatre, in musical and opera productions and the performance dance company, Dansynthesis. This program is designed to encompass the three major dance techniques and all aspects of producing a concert, from lighting and costume design to performance.
